Valves: When to Reclaim, When to Replace
By Larry Carley
Performance engine builders can’t afford to take chances with questionable valves because they have to withstand high rpms and temperatures. Likewise, rebuilders who overhaul high dollar heavy-duty diesel

The reasons behind the diesel-powered
vehicle’s continuing success can be
reduced to one common denominator:
Diesels use considerably less fuel than
their gasoline-powered counterparts.

Typical causes: extreme thermal cycles (continual sudden changing from full power to
shutdown), damage on valve seat/seat insert producing stress raisers or mechanical
overload due to valve bounce.
Symptom: Rough running, loss of compression & poor starting.
Remedy: Check all valves for cracking and replace where necessary, check engine
settings, valve springs, guides and followers.
Do not overpeed the engine.

Zinc dithiophosphate
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Structure of a monomeric zinc dialkyldithiophosphate
Zinc dialkyldithiophosphates (often referred to as ZDDP) are a family of coordination compounds invented by Castrol that feature zinc bound to the anion of dithiophosphoric acid. These uncharged compounds are not salts. They are soluble in nonpolar solvents, and the longer chain derivatives easily dissolve in mineral and synthetic oils used as lubricants. They come under CAS number [ 68649-42-3]. In aftermarket oil additives, the percentage of ZDDP ranges approximately between 2-15%. [1]

Any injector problem at sea can be rectified by replacing the injector with a spare. However the candidate is required to know how the following faults can be identified and rectified.

A very interesting article for the Technically Minded.
Abstract
This study focuses on investigation of the method of identifying injector faults in a JCB 444T2 diesel engine using
acoustic emission (AE) technique. Different kinds of injector faults were seeded in the four-cylinder, four-stroke,
and turbo-engine. Then, faulty injectors are tested to evaluate AE based injection fault detection.

Would you believe me if I were to tell you that the presence of a few tiny bubbles, some so small that you need a microscope to see them, could destroy a diesel engine? One problem that has been plaguing the owners of diesel rigs for years is cavitation.

Did you know that up to a third of the heat energy produced by an internal combustion engine ends up as waste heat in the cooling system?

Internal combustion engines run on heat. Chemical energy in the fuel is transformed into thermal energy when the fuel burns, which produce mechanical energy to push the pistons, spin the crankshaft and drive the vehicle down the road.

One of the most important parts of the cooling system is also the most invisible
A cylinder head gasket is required to affect a seal between the cylinder head and block of a gasoline or diesel engine. It is an integral component of the engine and is requires to perform many functions at the same time during engine operation.

Since hydraulic lifters can compensate for thermal expansion of the engine, the adjustments can be made with the engine cold; hot adjustment is not necessary.

Remember, when making any adjustments experimentally, that the engine is notably sluggish before it has warmed
up. Unless you are deliberately trying to overcome that problem only assess what you have done with the engine
fully hot

Please ensure the camshaft seal housing and camshaft seal center on the camshaft after fitting housing. If not centered then oil leak may occur and the timing cover and timing equipment will need to be removed and re-fitted to rectify the leak.
Please check at fitment. If deemed too out of alignment then removing the dowels and aligning and locking bolts down will rectify.

The camshaft bearing caps on this cylinder head are located with a single dowel only which can to lead to problems during installation. The bearing caps are able to move on the non dowel side and if tightened on an angle will lock up the camshaft. As the head was line bored in the manufacturing process the issues arise from the alignment of the bearing caps during assembly

Diesel Trouble Shooting Explanation
Low engine compression will result in insufficient heat being generated to ignite the fuel and cause hard starting. This is more of a problem with older or high mileage vehicles. To find out the compression perform a cold engine compression test. Compression should be between 20 to 35 bars or 300 to 500 PSI. Anything below this will cause starting problems.
